New York City Opera Initiatives for 2007-2008

Opera for Students and Young People

As part of its continuing program to make opera available to the widest possible audience, City Opera has lowered ticket prices for students and young people through three different programs. Half-price tickets for students are available online at http://www.nycopera.com/, through CenterCharge at 212-721-6500, or at The New York State Theater box office one week prior to each performance. There are also a limited number of $16 student rush tickets available on the day of the performance beginning at 4:00pm for evening performances, 10:00am for Saturday matinees, and 11:30am for Sunday matinees. Students may check in advance for rush ticket availability by calling 212-870-5630.

Our Big Deal! program allows young people from 21 to 39 years of age to purchase $30 tickets (usually in the orchestra) to the opera of their choice, two weeks in advance of each performance. Annual memberships cost $75 for Mezzo memberships which allot two tickets per performance. For young people interested in supporting City Opera with an annual contribution of $300 (1 person) to $500 (2 people) for Maestro memberships which include guaranteed $30 tickets, complimentary wine and refreshments in the Green Room during intermission and free entry to dress rehearsals. Membership also includes social events such as the pre-opera bashes where members can meet and enjoy free food and drink. Big Deal! members also have exclusive access to Big Mouth events, throughout the season, which offer introductions to the operas and behind-the-scenes glimpses at the productions. For information visit New York City Opera’s website: http://www.nycopera.com/ or call 212-870-4238.

Opera Education
In another nod to its populist heritage, City Opera continues to offer innovative and inviting programs to enhance the opera-going experience. In addition to the popular Production Dialogues which precede select Wednesday and Thursday evening performances and the Matinee Lectures which are scheduled prior to select Saturday and Sundays afternoon performances, City Opera is introducing three new opportunities: Time Out New York Intro to Opera Series, Target Family Series and City Opera Weekends.

Time Out New York Intro to Opera Series
These discussions with City Opera insiders are designed to demystify opera by exploring its basic components and pointing out what to look and listen for in the performance that follows. Subscribers to the series also receive a complimentary copy of The Rough Guide to Opera. Each 45-minute talk is followed by a light reception and begins at 6:30pm before the 7:30pm curtain for the following performances.

Tuesday, September 25 Don Giovanni
Tuesday, October 9 Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci
Tuesday, November 13 Cendrillon
Tuesday, April 14 Candide
The Intro to Opera Series is made possible with the generous support of Time Out New York

Target Family Series
Hour-long pre-matinee workshops with City Opera singers, instrumentalists and teaching staff will introduce families to the world of musical drama. Lunch is included at all workshops, as well as a year-long complimentary subscription to Time Out New York Kids. Adults purchasing a subscription will receive one free subscription for children ages 6-12. Additional children’s subscriptions may be purchased at a 50% discount. Workshop begins at 12:30pm before the following 1:30pm performances.
